Amazon Planning Standalone App for Sports Content

Amazon.com Inc is testing a standalone app to let users watch sports content, the Information reported on Wednesday, quoting a source with explicit knowledge of the plan.

Sports stays one of the most fantastic attractions for live viewing. As US audiences increasingly swap from pay TV subscriptions to streaming apps.

The move will probably complement Amazon’s effort to double down on sports programming. Through its Prime Video service, a key channel is to attract customers to its shopping platform.

Amazon already possesses the rights to stream games, including National Football League’s Thursday Night Football franchise. And Premier League soccer matches in the UK. Placing it up to politely compete with sports streaming leader Walt Disney Co.

Last week, Alphabet Inc unit YouTube also signed a multi-year deal to exclusively stream the NFL’s Sunday Ticket package of games in the United States.

According to the Information, it was opaque when Amazon rolled out the sports app. And whether it would drive through with the plan. But Amazon did not instantly respond to a Reuters request for comment.

The company has been examining unprofitable business units and has laid off some staff to cover increasing costs and a demand downturn as inflation-wary customers and businesses spend less.
