Meta brings WhatsApp’s Apple Memoji-like Avatars to Instagram with a Twist

In what can be witnessed as a push to its metaverse project, Facebook-parent Meta is now getting Avatars to Instagram in a new way. They can now be utilized as profile pictures on Instagram alongside your existing image

The company launched Avatars on Instagram last year in February and rolled out Avatars for WhatsApp last month. People can utilize these Avatars as their profile images and stickers on WhatsApp.

In a tweet, Instagram reported that Instagrammers could add their avatar along with their profile images. And profile visitors have to click on the profile picture to switch between both. Until now, Instagram Avatars could only be utilized on stories and DMs.

“Now you can add your avatar to the other side of your profile picture. And users who visit your profile can flip between the two,” the company stated.

Currently, when you click a profile picture, it extends that person’s Stories (if available). How this feature will function when rolled out to the masses is yet to be witnessed. It is significant that when you click a profile photo of a user on Facebook, it offers you two options: view profile picture and view Story. There is no ‘flipping’ functionality here.

What is an Avatar?

An Avatar is a digital version of you, and users can create an Avatar by picking the proper combination of available hairstyles, facial features, and outfits. Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, stated in a video last year, “Avatars are a key construction block for the future of personal essence in the metaverse.”

How to create an Instagram Avatar

  • To create a 3D avatar on Instagram, you can click the hamburger menu on the top left corner of their profiles.
  • Click “Settings” and select “Account.”
  • Search for “Avatars” and pick one for yourself.
  • In case you have linked your Facebook and Instagram accounts. You have already created an Avatar on Facebook. You can utilize your Facebook Avatar on Instagram and save yourself some time.
