How to Use Authy – The Best Replacement for Google Authenticator

Authy is a third-party authenticator app that you can use as a two-factor authenticator to make your logins more secure. Having a 2FA (two-factor authentication) enabled on your accounts can better protect your accounts and data. As technology improves day by day just having a good enough strong password might not be enough. Setting up 2FA for your accounts can protect you better and should be preferred to secure your accounts. In this article, we will show you how to use Authy as a replacement for your Google authenticator.

You can also use Authy for your other accounts e.g. Facebook,  but we will only show you how to use Authy as a replacement for Google Authenticator on your Google accounts. If you want to use Authy for your other accounts you can find a guide on the software website for the specific guide. There are many third-party Authenticator Apps available but Authy is the most reliable one we found.

How to Use Authy as an Authenticator for Your Google Account

To use Authy as an authenticator download the mobile app from the Play Store or App Store on your Android or iOS mobile.

Open the App it will ask you to set up an account. You need to provide your Phone Number with Your Country code and email to create an account. Now leave the Authy App for now and open up your Gmail account in your Windows Browser. Click on the account icon in the top left corner of your screen and click on manage your account

Now select security and click on 2 step verification to set up Two-Step verification.

It will ask you to re-login to set up 2 step verification. Enter your details and log in again.

Now add your Phone Number and click Next and Add the code your receive on the next page.

This will set up Two-factor authentication for your account. Now scroll down and under backup codes click on Show codes. Save these codes so you have backup codes in case you lose your device.

Now scroll down more and click on Set Up under the Authenticator App option.

Select your device and click Next.

Now you will be able to see a QR Code.

Open up your mobile app click on the + option to add an account. If you have already added an account you can click on the three dots on the top right of your screen and click add an account. Now select Scan QR Code and Scan the QR Code from your browser.

Now it might ask you to Setup back up. Add the temporary password it asks for and set up your backup.

Next, you will be able to see the authentication code in your Authy App write this code in your browser and click verify.

Desktop Client

You can also download the Authy Desktop App on your PC. Just go to https://authy.com/download/ and download the app desktop app. Log in with your number that you added on your mobile app and click next.

Now you can get codes on this app by selecting your account you want to get codes for.

In this article, we showed you how you can use Authy as your primary authenticator. Please make sure that enable backups on the Authy app and also enable “Allow multi-device option from Authy settings.
