Windows will dynamically allocate drive letters to them as you plug new removable storage devices. In most circumstances, it automatically progresses through the alphabet with your main Windows drive using the drive letter C. However, you might like to switch a drive’s letter for more comfortable management.
Whether it’s a removable or internal storage drive, you can modify a drive letter on Windows 11 or Windows 10 through the steps below.
Change a Drive Letter on Windows 11 through Windows Settings
Before you modify a drive letter on Windows, there are a couple of things worth noting about this approach. First, you shouldn’t attempt to modify your local C: drive letter, as it’s where Windows and most of your software run from. Modifying the main drive letter will result in Windows not booting and apps won’t run properly.
Considering that, changing a drive letter on Windows 11 is a precise process if you’re using Windows Settings. To get started:
Click the Windows Start Menu and search for Settings.
Once you get to the Windows Settings, select System from the sidebar on the left, then click storage on the right.
Scroll down a bit and expand the Advanced Storage Settings by clicking it, then select Disks & Volumes.
Once you get to the Disks & Volumes section, click the drive you want to modify. Then click the Properties.
Now, click the Change drive letter button under the Volume Data.
Next, click the arrow to open the drop-down menu. Select the letter you like to use from the menu and click OK. We’re changing an external USB drive from F to S in this example.
That’s it. The modification happens instantly, and you’ll see it reflected in File Explorer and throughout the Windows 11 experience.
How to Change a Drive Letter on Windows 10 and 11 Through Disk Management
The Disk Management tool can also be used to modify your drive letter. This process works with both Windows 10 and Windows 11 PCs.
To modify a drive letter on Windows 11 or Windows 10 through Disk Management, all you need is to click the Windows Start Menu and search for disk management. Or press the Windows key + X on your keyboard and select Disk Management from the menu.
Once you get to the Disk Management section, right-click on the drive you want to modify and click Change Drive Letter and Paths from the menu.
Click the Change button on the window that appears.
Pick the letter you like from the drop-down menu. Once you’ve picked the drive letter, click OK.
Confirm the pop-up, and your drive’s letter will change instantly.
