Twitter is designing a new feature to let users manage who can mention them on the platform with a toggle. Users can either altogether vacate the feature for mentions or modify the mentions to only those accounts they follow.
App researcher, Jane Manchun Wong, posted a picture of the feature Twitter was testing to give users more authority over their tweets.
Turning off the toggle for ‘Allow Others to Mention would restrict any mentions. Just like their recently launched feature, letting users leave chats. Restricting mentions would mean other users can still mention your account. But it won’t link to the user account or notify them.
The option also allows users to determine the mentions to only those they follow. Recently, Twitter has announced a range of audience control tools for users. Such as restricted replies, Twitter Circles for private group chats, Safety Mode for auto-blocking spam and abusive replies, and Communities for enclosed discussions.
Twitter is endeavoring to minimize the harmful impact of social media. Users should be able to restrict mentions and dictate their user experience on social sites with the tools provided.
