How City Traffic Police Can Manage Traffic on Roads Using Google Maps Live Traffic

Nowadays technology is spreading everywhere. When it comes to research and take decisions deep in the oceans or high in the space we rely on technology. Technology nowadays covers all industries of the world, the automobile industry, the medical industry, the medicine industry, the defense, control, and planning of the cities, and a lot more. Machines are this much intelligent that the take decisions using artificial intelligence to make everything a better for the human. If you look at Google Maps it has detailed information about every corner of the world. Google Maps has now 50 million contributors around the world to make it more useful for every person to fill-up to take better decisions while on road.

In this article, I will explain how the City Traffic Police in Pakistan can utilize Google Maps to manage traffic issues across the country especially in major cities like Lahore, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Karachi and many other big cities.

Google Maps has a very interesting feature called live traffic. This live traffic shows real-time traffic situation on the roads and by utilizing this feature a normal user can make better decisions during their trips so as City Traffic Police across the country.

In this article I will take Rawalpindi as an example,  we all are aware that city traffic police Rawalpindi deploy their officers in many areas of Rawalpindi to manage the traffic situation across the city. But we have seen many cases where there are major roadblocks and traffic jams which results in great time loss as well as delay during emergency services. This can be managed using Google Maps live traffic analyzation at the Central Control Room. Rather than deploying forces on predefined locations, forces should be deployed intelligently using Google Maps live traffic.

The Central Control Room of city traffic police should continuously monitor the live traffic situation and mobilize the on ground forces as per needs especially near the hospitals and other emergency services areas.

Google Maps Live Traffic for City Traffic Police

If you look into the above image you can see that there are lines in green, orange and red color. The green means the traffic is going normal, there is no congestion. The orange means there is congestion building up, and the red means the traffic road is blocked or traffic jam.

At point 1 and 5 you can see the lines are green and traffic is normal. So if we have deputed or traffic officers at green lines road they are not that productive as they should be. They are underutilized. If you look at point 3 in orange that means traffic congestion is building up. At this point, the most critical points are 2 and 4 as lines are red. These roads are totally blocked and traffic is not moving as it should be so this is the most critical area where our first priority should mobilize the forces from the green area to this red area. We know that there must be forces on the ground but they might not be sufficient to manage the situation as it goes red so moving traffic officers from green area to this red area can help manage the flow of the traffic. The second priority should be to move the forces in the area where lines are getting orange in color to ensure these roads don’t get into the red lines.

I agreed that it might be difficult to manage the situation in start or to adopt this method but with daily use and setting a proper procedures and processes in place can help the control room officers to take better decisions and to depute the forces as required to ensure the flow of traffic within the city  and in bigger picture it can help to resolve major traffic problems of the cities.

I could not say it should be directly implemented in the whole city but few of the portion of the city should be monitored through Google Maps live traffic and then the operations can be expanded if it helps. I am sure it will help to make our traffic officers more productive and we can utilize them at best.
