How to Electronically Sign PDF Documents Without Printing and Scanning Them

You’ve been emailed a document and need to sign it and send it back. You could print the document, sign it, scan it, and email it back. But there’s a more practical, faster way.

We’ll show you how to add your signature to any PDF document fast, keeping it as a standard PDF file that is readable anywhere.

Electronic Signatures, Not Digital Signatures

First, let’s neaten out some terminology. This article deals with electronic signatures, not digital signatures, which are something else entirely.

Electronically Sign PDF Documents on Windows Using Adobe Reader

Launch the PDF document in the Adobe Acrobat Reader DC application to sign a document. Click the “Fill & Sign” option from the sidebar on the right.

Select “Sign yourself” on the toolbar and click “Add Signature” to add your signature to Adobe Acrobat Reader DC.

You can form a signature in one of three ways. By default, Adobe Reader prefers “Type,” so you can write your name and get it converted to a signature. This won’t look like your actual signature, so it likely isn’t ideal.

Instead, you’ll probably like to choose “Draw” and then draw your signature utilizing your mouse or a touch screen. You can also pick “Image” if you desire to sign a piece of paper, scan it with a scanner, and then add your written signature to Adobe Reader.

After forming a signature, click “Apply” to use it in the document. Leave “Save Signature” checked, and you can instantly add this signature in the future.

Set your signature where you need it with your mouse and click to apply it. If you prefer to save your signature, you’ll find it smoothly available in the “Sign” menu in the future.

To keep your signed PDF document, click File> Save and choose a location for the File. This is how you can electronically sign PDF documents without printing and scanning them.
